About Me

Helene Kusnitz learned to sew from her mother. As an adult she has been a self-taught quilt artist for over twenty-five years. Recently, Helene began combining other methods including weaving and felting in her work and now enjoys a more free form style using a wide range of fibers, textiles and embellishments.

Helene is continually learning by taking workshops with nationally known instructors in various fiber arts. She has exhibited locally and won many awards for her work. Helene has been teaching quilting and sewing to both children and adults since 2000.

Helene is a member of the Long Island Craft Guild, The Textile Study Group of New York, Artist Craftsmen of New York, Studio Art Quilt Associates Surface Design Association and Northeast Feltmakers Guild.

Artist Statement
I choose to work in fiber because of its tactile sensations. Various textures and colors may be used as a starting point for a project. Other inspirations may be the photographs I take and patterns and color combinations in nature. Lines or marks are added to the piece by hand or machine stitching to give even more texture, depth and movement. Embellishments such as beads or other found objects enrich the work and add a final detail of surprise. All this combines to make the viewer want to reach out and touch.
